The NASCAR Week That Was: June 27-July 3

Happy 4th of July! It was a familiar number in victory lane on Friday night as Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Nationwide race at Daytona driving a car with a special Wrangler #3 paint scheme in honor of his late father. Dale Jr. said both before and after the race that this would likely be the last time he would run in a #3 car. In other news the International Speedway Corporation requested a second date for Kansas Speedway in 2011. NASCAR and ISC officials declined to say which track could lose a date. And finally NASCAR chairman Brian France said during a press conference Friday the sanctioning body was looking at making changes to the Chase for the Sprint Cup. France said he wants more drama in the chase for the championship. This is the NASCAR week that was June 27 to July 3, 2010.

If he wants more excitement in the chase, why not just run the final race for the championship, a one-race chase? Ten cars go in tied for points, winner is the champ.

(I have never liked the chase. Cup runs a 36-race season, and the best car over 36 races should be champ. 43-42-41, add ‘em up at the end.))
