At the inception of the Late Model Sportsman tour (now the Nationwide Series), starting fields were limited to 24 cars. At one point in the 1980's the Cup series only started 36 cars, 32 at short tracks. Even with those small fields there were some-uh-not full time racers running in some races. I wasn't there but I was told Bobby Hillin, Jr. made his cup debut in a race where NASCAR couldn't muster a full 36 car field. So if history is any guide, NASCAR could cut the number of entries and kill off most of the S&P cars, but why should they? 43 entries is better than 36 or 32 by any measure and is certainly better than 24. A parallel universe... I was surprised that Subaru pulled out but I bet they'll be back if/when the auto industry recovers. This new version of WRC is still really cool, but lacks something with only two manufacturers involved. I miss the days of Tommi Makinen, Marcus Gronholm, Colin McRae (RIP), Carlos Sainz, and Petter Solberg. Those days were epic... Still say WRC drivers are the best racers in the world.
