The NASCAR Week That Was: June 7-13

Yet again Jeremy Mayfield was the big news this week. ESPN The Magazine’s Ryan McGee reported that allegedly the drug Mayfield tested positive for was methamphetamine. Only two of the three drugs NASCAR said showed up on Mayfield’s drug test have been publicly identified. Auto manufacturer bankruptcies and subsequent cutbacks also made headlines this week. Richard Petty Motorsports made cuts this week after it said the Chrysler Corporation had stopped making payments to the organization. Nine employees were laid off and cuts were made to salaries and benefits. Meanwhile General Motors announced NASCAR wide cuts to their program. JR Motorsports and Kevin Harvick Inc. became the early victims of the cutbacks, losing their long time support from the manufacturer. In other news Bryan Berry, crew chief for Brendan Gaughan’s #62 Nationwide Series team was suspended indefinitely for allegedly making a racial slur against African-American driver Marc Davis. Berry maintained his innocence to car owner Rusty Wallace, but Wallace said they did not plan to appeal the penalty. This is the NASCAR week that was June 7 to 13, 2009.
