I Don’t Want The Season To Be Over

As I was leaving Phoenix this weekend, it suddenly hit me that this season is all but over.  We’ve got one race left at Homestead, and then the 2008 season is history.  What a bummer…

I know there are a lot of people that work in this sport that are looking forward to having the next couple of months’ worth of weekends off.  I’m not one of them.  I, like many guys I know, have a little vacation planned once the season wraps this weekend, but if it were up to me I’d come back from vacation and head right back to the track.

I guess maybe I’m kind of sick in this way, but I really enjoy what I do and don’t necessarily need time off.  From February to November, I become so involved with the sport, that its difficult every year to picture life with no racing on the weekends.  I’ve had discussions with Journo before about how I end up living week to week during the season just because I’m always looking forward to the next race.  Racing is a major part of my life, and even when I’m not at the track, I find myself watching NASCAR stuff on TV and spending a lot of time talking about it.  When they say NASCAR isn’t a sport, its a way of life, they are right.

And now this year, I feel like my involvement in the sport has been ratcheted up a notch with myself and Journo starting the blog.  But even though we won’t be racing, and there might not be as much news, I’m hoping that being able to write about racing on a regular basis until February might make it a little easier.  We’ve got some good offseason ideas for you, so stay tuned.

Looking back on the year, I’ve got to chalk 2008 up as a success.  It was a trying season at times, but I also had a lot of fun and even got to celebrate a little.  Hopefully that will carry over to 2009 and beyond.

As much as I’m bummed the season is almost over, and I don’ t know what I’m going to do with myself for the next few weekends, having the time off will be good.  It’s always good to get the opportunity to spend a little time with friends and family, and I’m sure I’ll take full advantage of the chance to watch a lot of football.  It will also give me time to improve as a changer and get my body prepared for the 2009 campaign.

With the door closing on 2008, we may be in for the most difficult offseason NASCAR has experienced in many years, with so many layoffs happening and more rumored.   Hopefully though everyone will land on their feet and will be back at Daytona come February.  I know I’ll be ready.

Come on Neon, you know I can’t say one way or the other… You’d be able to narrow down who I worked for, and that would not be good for the anonymity of the blog. Nice try though!

Right on! and I actually hope both you and Journo are able to maintain your undercover status. That’s what makes this site so great. The “insiders” perspective. Where a sanctioning body, sponsor or team owner cannot squelch or filter the true view of life in and around the sport.
An off tangent question: what is the single most difficult movement for a tire changer during a pit stop? The one aspect that might set you apart from your competition?
