The NASCAR Week That Was: Oct. 19-25

NASCAR dropped the hammer on another team this week after a post-race inspection revealed a rule violation. NASCAR indefinitely suspended #83 car crew chief Kevin Hamlin and car chief Craig Smoksted after it was discovered the team was using sheetmetal thinner than the NASCAR mandate. Additionally, NASCAR fined Hamlin $100,000 and penalized driver Brian Vickers and owner Dieter Matschitz 150 points. In other news two drivers are said to be in their 2009 rides before the end of the season. Marcus Ambrose will be in the #47 JTG-Daugherty Racing (MWR backed) ride, and Larry McReynolds reported on Speed that Mark Martin would be in the #5 for the remainder of the season. The truck series is sponsorless no more, with NASCAR announcing this week that Camping World would take over the title sponsorship of the sport beginning next year. And finally NASCAR is now saying they are considering changes to their testing schedule in light of the current economic situation. They said they want to make it fair for “the haves and the have nots.” This is the NASCAR week that was October 19 to 25, 2008.
