Neon: NASCAR won't allow teams to make serious repairs on pit road. Its just too dangerous to have guys laying under cars and out on pit road for extended periods of time. And you can only have seven guys over the wall. Taking a car to the garage allows the whole team to make repairs.

Thanks alot for the answer TC.
Good point about the right person for the right job. Even if you have all the mechanical knowledge in the world if you cant toss a 75# tire (as randy said) like a life saver, then your useless. Buy the same token when you have carb problems, someone tossing that tire wont do you a bit of good in a hurry up pace car just turned its lights off situation.

Neon,
Interesting thought, I don't know if there are more cars going back there for that reason. I kinda felt it was a safety thing. Like NASCAR said anything more then 5 laps on pit road go to the garage.

Is it fair to say that this is the reason a car will go "behind the wall" for repairs or diagnosis sooner than in years past? Thus, getting the car back to the flood of true "knowledgeable mechanics".

I had the privilege of visiting Pit Crew U in Mooresville. These folks go through an incrediable amount of physical training. I would say it was on par with NFL training. These young people were throwing around tires like they were Life Savers candy. I have the utmost respect for them. They are athletes!
