The Series is called What Now?

Written by Journo on April 29th, 2008

The constant evolution of the NASCAR series’ is what makes it such a great sport. However, with this comes the ever changing Series Sponsors. As you may have noticed throughout our posts, probably mine more than TC’s I am never really sure what to call a certain series.

For instance, if I am referring to the ‘Nationwide’ Series of the past do I call it the Nationwide Series or the Busch Series. Or perhaps if I am referring to the Busch Series before it was the Busch Series do I call it Late Model Sportsman. Are Sam Ard and Morgan Shepherd ’Nationwide Series’ champions or are they Late Model Sportsman Champions? On the flip side are Matt Kenseth and Darrell Waltrip Winston Cup Series Champions or Sprint Cup Champions?

I’ve heard drivers in interviews say that they have a Winston Cup Series championship, not a Sprint Cup Championship. In fact recently I heard someone (I’m not positive who it was, maybe Jeff Gordon) correct a reporter who said he was a Sprint Cup Champion.

For over 30 years the question of what to call the series was not a really an issue. It was the Winston Cup Series, it was the Busch Series. No questions asked. Today we stand at a period of sponsor Merry-Go-Round with no clear end in sight. Craftsman, the only corporate sponsor the truck series has known since its inception in 1995 will call it quits at the end of the season. And again we will have to learn another name for the series we watch week in and week out.

So in advance of any future writings I’m sorry. In general my policy is to use the current name of the series, when referring to previous seasons, despite the confusion it may create. However if you have any ideas that make more sense please feel free to let me know.
